Social Studies:New Forces of Defence Used During WW1

World War 1 was one of the biggest wars in the country. It began in 1914 and ended in 1918, it was also the beginning of the United States of America becoming a world superpower. They used weapons back then that aren’t used now a days since technology & weapons got better. As Well as how the warfare was and how they communicated changed.
Soldiers of WW1 used a wide variety of weapons. Weapons including tanks, planes, machine guns, bayonets, rifles, pistols, zeppelins, dreadnoughts, artillery, gas, flamethrowers, submarines and other. Poison gases were first used in WW1 by the Germans, it was very powerful and was used in trenches. The effect it had on soldiers is that it would make skin blisters, would target the lungs, and causes external and internal bleeding. The first tank to be used since armoured cars could not cope with the terrain, was called “Little Willie.” IT could only hold a crew of 3 and weighed about 14 tons moving at a max. speed of 3 mph. Zeppelins were also created by the Germans for bombing, and carrying machine guns and 4, 400 lbs of bombs.
There were different types of Warfare such as Trench Warfare, Submarine Warfare, and Aerial Combat. Trench warfare took place in dug below ground levels in the battlefields fronts . Living in the trenches was hard due to the rat infestations, Lice, Fungal infection of the feet and more. Submarine warfare was first brought out by the Germans and it was such a major impact that America joined the war. The called it WW1 at sea and it mostly took place in eastern and western fronts, including naval battles and u - boat actions. Aerial Combat was intended to have started in 1915 after a french pilot shot down a German air pilot. They reinforced the propeller blades for a gun machine so that it would be easier to hit a target.
There were very few communication used in WW1 due to technology not being as advanced as it is now. Telegram were being used because radio sets were large, heavy, expensive, and others, but in telegram you could only use codes instead of voice communication. The telegraphs were starting to become valuable to artillery forces due to the distances of guns being increased. The first major use of radio was for navigation, it really reduced the isolation of ships and saved thousands of lives. Since the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, they started to value radio to ocean vessels.
In conclusion, there were many weapons, types of warfare, and communication in World War 1. The ended in 1918, many died and a lot were injured in this great war.
